Pretty Bird Woman House

April 27th, 2007 by deer

Hi

As most of you know, I’ve been working with Amnesty International to
raise awareness about violence against Native women. I wanted to
make sure you know of the Amnesty website focusing on this issue.

http://www.amnestyusa.org/maze

You can download the 133-page report, watch a video, slideshow,
download summaries, etc etc.

NPR covered the story in "All Things Considered" on Tuesday. You can
listen online here:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=9803207

The listener response has been phenomenal. One of the stories
featured on the radio spot was about Pretty Bird Woman House in South
Dakota, which is running out of funding. Due to the high response of
listeners asking how they could donate, PBWH now has a website where
you can donate. Please spread the word.

New Komen Campaign that Objectifies Women’s Bodies is No Cure

Please read article at the above link. I continue to be frustrated by the "Pink Ribbon, Inc." corporate mentality around the tragedy that is breast cancer.

I’m cold! Send hats! :)

Love

Sarah

Since this seems to be so friggin’ hard for people…..

It is normal to feel that you don’t know what to say to someone who has cancer. You might only know the person casually, or you may have a closer relationship. The most important thing you can do is acknowledge the situation in some way – whatever is most comfortable for you. You can show interest and concern, you can express encouragement, or you can offer support. Sometimes the most simple expressions of concern are the most meaningful.

Here are some ideas:

  • "I’m not sure what to say, but I want you to know I care."
  • "I’m sorry to hear that you are going through this."
  • "How are you doing?"
  • "If you would like to talk about it, I am here."
  • "Please let me know if I can help."
  • "I’ll keep you in my thoughts."

Seeing Red about Thinking Pink

The “pink” slogan behind National breast Cancer Awareness Month has become consumer-oriented and emphasizes an individualistic approach to healthcare.
